Beavers build dams to raise water levels so they can escape underwater from predators — wolves and bears. In Britain, those predators have been extinct for centuries. But beavers keep building anyway, because their dam-building behavior is hard-wired, not learned. They have no way of knowing the threat no longer exists.
The logic behind dam building is straightforward: deeper water means a safer escape route when a predator approaches. The beaver dives in, disappears beneath the surface, and the predator has nothing to pursue. It is a survival mechanism that evolved over millennia alongside wolves, bears, and other large predators.
Britain lost those predators long ago. Yet when two Norwegian beavers — Millie and Bjornar — were relocated to Napdale Forest in western Scotland in 2009, they immediately set to work building dams. No wolves. No bears. No learned trigger. Just the instinct firing as reliably as it always had, as Lauren Frayer reports in Up First from NPR.
The behavior is hard-wired at a level that environmental context simply cannot override. Beavers do not assess their surroundings, find the threat absent, and update their behavior. The dam gets built regardless — because the blueprint is encoded, not taught.
What is ecologically purposeless from a predator-avoidance standpoint turns out to be enormously useful from a climate standpoint. The dams beavers build to hide from wolves that no longer exist are the same dams that now slow rainwater runoff, retain moisture in the landscape, and create wetlands where none existed before.
At the Ealing Beaver Project in West London, a 20-acre park — formerly a golf course — was transformed into a water-retaining wetland within weeks of beaver arrival. A nearby London Underground station had struggled with chronic flooding for years, with engineering solutions estimated at hundreds of thousands to over one million pounds. The beavers solved it at a fraction of that cost, as explored in detail in this episode of Up First.
The ecological knock-on effects have been just as striking. Since beavers arrived at the Ealing site, eight new bird species and two new bat species have been recorded — with bat species count rising from four to six. The wetland created by an instinct aimed at long-extinct predators became a habitat engine.

Frayer traveled to multiple locations across Britain to report on the reintroduction of beavers as a climate adaptation strategy, including Napdale Forest in western Scotland and the Ealing Beaver Project in West London. She visited four different beaver sites, hiked with forest rangers at 4 a.m., and interviewed scientists, veterinarians, farmers, and conservationists over the course of this investigation — one of the most hands-on field reports Up First from NPR has produced on the UK's rewilding effort.
Frayer's reporting makes clear that the reintroduction program was not accidental. A 1992 EU law required member states to investigate species that had been driven to extinction by human activity and explore whether reintroduction was feasible. By the early 20th century, beavers had been hunted to extinction in Britain, with only approximately 1,200 left across Europe and northern Asia. The legal and scientific groundwork that followed led directly to Millie and Bjornar's arrival in Scotland in 2009.

Beavers have been released into fire-damaged areas of Washington state following wildfires across the American West. Research has found that areas with beaver activity retain significantly more water, creating natural firebreaks that help slow the spread of future wildfires.
Beaver bombers are renegade wildlife enthusiasts who illegally release unlicensed beavers into areas — particularly large farming zones in Scotland — where official reintroduction programs have not been authorized, creating legal and ecological disputes with landowners and farmers.
Farmers, represented in part by Kate Maitland of the National Farmers Union in Scotland, argue that beavers can dam irrigation channels, flood food crops, and damage agricultural land — raising serious concerns about the economic impact of reintroduction on farming communities.
