Municipal authorities had budgeted hundreds of thousands — potentially over one million pounds — for conventional engineering works at the flood-prone London tube station site: large diggers, earthworks, and purpose-built reservoirs. Beavers accomplished the same flood mitigation at a fraction of that cost. Conservationists argue they did it better, and far more sustainably, than any human-engineered solution would have.
For years, the ticket office of a London Underground station regularly filled with water whenever it rained. The conventional fix — the one engineers had costed up — involved heavy machinery, significant earthworks, and the construction of water-retention infrastructure. The budget ran into the hundreds of thousands, with estimates reaching above one million pounds.
The alternative came in the form of beavers, relocated into a 20-acre park adjacent to the station — a former golf course. Within weeks of their arrival, the animals had begun engineering the landscape themselves, building dams that slowed and stored water across the site. The flooding problem at the station was resolved. The sandbags were no longer needed.

The cost advantage of beavers isn't just about avoiding heavy machinery. It's structural. Beavers build continuously, adapt their dams in response to water levels, and recruit their own young into the work — at no additional cost to the public. The wetland they create is self-maintaining in ways that concrete and earthworks are not.
The Ealing Beaver Project in West London, where this tube station case played out, also recorded a measurable biodiversity uplift alongside the flood mitigation: 8 new bird species and 2 new bat species arrived after the beavers, with the bat count rising from 4 to 6 species. That's an ecological dividend that no conventional engineering scheme would have delivered.

Frayer traveled to multiple locations across Britain to report on the country's beaver reintroduction program, including Napdale Forest in western Scotland and the Ealing Beaver Project in West London. She visited four different beaver sites in total, hiked with forest rangers at 4 a.m., and interviewed scientists, veterinarians, farmers, and conservationists. Her investigation for Up First examined both the ecological and the economic case for beavers as a climate adaptation tool.
