As one experienced scaffolder explained to Terry Riggs in this episode, individual brilliance has zero value if you cannot function within a crew. When three or four people are working together on a scaffold, each person's actions ripple across the entire structure.

The Cost of Incompatibility

When team members cannot work together, the crew does not try to fix the situation through mediation or patience. They simply replace the person, and often bring in two workers to fill the gap. This speaks to how non-negotiable cooperation is—it is not a soft skill or a nice-to-have, but a structural requirement of the work.

The reason is concrete: a scaffold is shared physical space where human error has immediate, fatal consequences. Terry Riggs noted that his deepest fear was colleagues invading his space, because a careless movement or misstep could push him off the side. Everyone on the crew must know where everyone else is, anticipate movements, and maintain constant spatial awareness.
